Titanborn by Rhett C. Bruno

book review

Titanborn by Rhett C. Bruno follows Malcolm Graves, a Collector that catches fugitives all over the galaxy. When his latest mission goes south, he takes a bombing case to prove himself to his employer. He’s assigned a new partner, a young Cogent (basically a super soldier) to make sure he doesn’t screw up again, and the duo is on the case. They travel all over the galaxy, searching for a new terrorist group that Malcolm’s employers want in custody.

I think the strongest aspect of this novel was the world building. The author shows us a futuristic world that, after a meteorite crashes into Earth, those left have started inhabiting other planets just to make sure the human race survives.Humans on other planets have evolved as a result, some of them becoming something not quite human. Rhett Bruno captures the little details from how it feels to walk on different planets to the feel of space suits. The author definitely put a lot of thought into his world.

On the flip side, there was a lot of info dumping, giving us long passages of a planet’s history that probably could have been condensed a little more. Malcolm also has a lot of flashbacks that were enjoyable, but I think unnecessary to the plot.

This book also followed a lot of tropes: old bounty hunter trying to prove himself after a colossal screw up is paired with a rookie which he assumes is his partner (I did like how their relationship evolved though), he drinks a lot, and is cynical (though with his job, who wouldn’t be?).

The ending for me was disappointing, and I found the plot to be predictable. This story just didn’t have any big twists I didn’t see coming.

My Rating: 3.5/5

Plot: 3/5

Dialog: 3/5

Entertainment: 4/5

Writing: 3.5/5

Characters: 4/5
