Curse Me Not by Elizabeth Fisher
Curse Me Not by Elizabeth Fisher follows Elzetta Swan, a woman who can see auras. When this gift emerged, she was a nobody in a backwater town, but it didn’t take her long to realize that clean curses off auras as a bodywasher was a great way to get out of her tiny town and make a whole lot of money. She’s almost done with her first year in the new career, when a routine cleansing turns out to be way bigger than she’d anticipated. She worries an invoker may be staying in Knoxville. With the curses piling up and an intense attraction to a skeptical police captain to distract her, Elzetta has more on her plate than ever before.
I’m just going to say it: I loved this book. I was already looking forward to it because of my love for the genre, but we don’t often read about gifted, middle-aged characters. Most are about teens coming into their own and saving the day, so reading from Elzetta’s perspective as a woman who’s already lived a good bit of life and fate throwing her a curve ball with this gift was refreshing.
The plot was interesting and the premise new. I did guess about three quarters of the way through who the person responsible for the curses was but for this genre, that’s pretty good. I usually have the big bad figured out in the first quarter of the book.
I loved the author’s writing style. Elzetta’s voice came in loud and clear, and her charming turn of phrase had me laughing out loud. But the descriptions the author gave of auras, or really anything else, was beautiful. I could not put this book down.
Elzetta and the Captain’s chemistry is off the charts too! Sure there’s a little back and forth between them, but it wasn’t annoying like it sometimes comes across with younger characters that can’t make up their minds. These two know that they’re polar opposites, but the friendship they build throughout the book is sweet. And I won’t say anything more about them! The other characters come through loud and clear as well, and I can’t wait to read more about them. I hope the second book comes out soon, because I will be buying it!
My Rating: 4.8/5
