Bits of Me by Megnan Scott is about a young woman, Melanie Wainright, who recently moved from New York City to Kentucky after a break up with a controlling ex. She meets jumper trainer Jake Hamilton, and the sparks fly from their first encounter.
As a horsewoman, I love everything horse related, especially western style/horse related romances. Bev Petterson is the standard by which I judge all horse romances, so I had high hopes for this book.
My thoughts:
The chemistry between Jake and Melanie was smokin’ hot. Their relationship also matured at a believable rate and their interactions were cute. I liked that they could relate to one another and helped each other heal from painful pasts, but weren’t totally dependent on one another. There were a couple scenes that were a bit unbelievable and hard to swallow. I won’t tell you because we don’t do spoilers, but you’ll know them when you read them.
I enjoyed how close Melanie and Amy were. You could tell that they’ve known each other for a long time. I did not however, enjoy how they addressed each other by “whore or slut.” Some may find these terms between friends endearing but I found it distasteful. I also found it hard to believe just by how Amy and Melanie acted and spoke, that they were mature professionals. I thought them to be in their early twenties, not thirties.
I found the plot to be predictable and without any real surprises and the dialogue immature. I think this book has promise, but the execution lacked a bit.
I did like some of the supporting characters like Abe. I’d love to see something happen between him and his lady love. That’s a story line that would be worth pursuing.
