Rising by Holly Kelly
Rising by Holly Kelly is a tale of underwater romance. Holly Kelly creates a vivid underwater world with new creatures and a swoon-worthy hero, Xanthus (I love that name!). There’s nail-biting conflict from the beginning and the author manages to keep you on your toes right until the very end.
What I liked:
The setting. Not only do I love to read about Hawaii, Kelly created an awesome underwater world that I could easily visualize.
The Dagonians. I loved the lore behind them which was well thought out, and I loved the conflict with the Mers.
Xanthus and I have a love-hate relationship. He pushes the limits of the Alpha male trope, and there are some things he did that drove me crazy, but overall, I enjoyed his character. Although dropping Sara in the water when she was terrified was not cool, man.
What didn’t work:
Sara. She was such a pushover from the gate. I mean Xanthus scheduled a cosmetic surgery for her to get her eyes changed (it was a good reason) and she didn’t even blink. Also, their relationship seemed a bit rushed for me.
Some of the dialogue came off a little stilted and formal, and I did find a couple mistakes, but overall, the writing wasn’t bad.
My Rating: 4/5
Creature Feature: 5/5
