Wicked Hunger by DelSheree Gladden
Wicked Hunger by DelSheree Gladden is a Young Adult Paranormal about a brother, Xander and sister, Vanessa. The story is told in alternating chapters from either Van’s or Xander’s point of view and focuses on their lives. No so remarkable, right? Except that Van and Xander are cursed. Now it’s getting interesting. I found the curse to be rather creative as well as horrifying. What is their curse? Hunger. They’re not hungry for burgers and chocolate though, the author is far more sinister. Vanessa and Xander crave fear, pain and death. The story is their struggle to learn control, to not kill those they love, and to learn about their existance. There were some parts that dragged and I wasn’t thrilled about the ending, but overall, I was happy to continue reading. I’ll probably read book two and three as well.
I loved this new concept. I read through the entire book, learning about Van and Xander’s curse, but not what they were. It was refreshing to know only as much as the characters did about themselves, although at times a bit frustrating.
Ketchup. I love the nickname and I love that he’s stuck by Van’s side for years and has accepted her odd behavior and loves her in spite of it.
What Didn’t Work for Me:
Noah. At first, I thought he was a sweet guy, but I found the love triangle to be unnecessary and although he was sweet and nice to Van, he unintentionally hurt her by showing off his normal life and normal family, which was something she’s always wanted, but could never have.
Ivy. She was pretty obvious, right from the start. But I feel like there were a lot of times she could have acted out her plan and the author just dragged it out.
Xander. I both loved and hated him. I hated the double standards he tried to impose on Vanessa and I hated that he didn’t trust her. I also loved their relationship. They really did care for one another and it showed.
The ending. While not a total cliffhanger- most of the story got resolved- it still made you need to read the next book to find out what exactly Van and Xander were.
My Rating: 4
